Americans spent close to $10 billion in online purchases of furniture during the first quarter of 2023. That’s more than double what UK and German consumers spent. During the same time, Americans also spent more per piece of furniture, with the average item carrying a price tag of $378.

These findings come from the latest category benchmark report from Grips Intelligence, where I take a look at the performance of the furniture category and the US, UK and Germany. That includes identifying the top selling furniture subcategories like beds, cabinets and storage. Furniture, sofas and more, as well as revealing the market share of top retailers.

For instance, Grips reports that Amazon.com brought in more revenue from furniture than any other site in the United States, while in Germany, IKEA took the top spot. Interestingly, IKEA ranks only seventh in the United States for furniture sales. Americans are much more fond of Wayfair when it comes to their furniture purchases, which came in second overall and 1st when it comes to the sofa category.

One additional thing that you’ll learn from downloading this report are the cultural differences that we expose when we analyze share sales by country. Specifically, Grips found that Americans spend more on office chairs while Brits spend more on kitchen and dining chairs. Meanwhile, Germans outperform the others on gaming chairs and bar stools.
